See recent press for Tomero Stephen Tanzer: “Carlos Pulenta was the former president and CEO of Salentein before leaving to start his own high-end operation in the Vistalba section of Lujan de Cuyo. The recently constructed cellar is an elegant and tranquil facility constructed largely of marble, slate, inert concrete and dark woods. Pulenta owns 53 hectares of red grapes around the winery, 80% of which is malbec planted in 1948 (the rest is newly planted malbec, bonarda, merlot and cabernet sauvignon). The varietal wines labeled Tomero are all about fruit; they are sourced from Pulenta's (father’s) 342 hectares of vines in the Uco Valley (Tupungato). The more serious Vistalba wines, from vineyards around the winery, are done in concrete and stainless steel, with two large wood fermenters reserved for the Corte A.” All wines are hand-harvested. The tomero, a central character in Mendoza, becomes part of the vineyard scenario in 1833 and his presence there continues to this day. His job is the distribution of irrigation water in those vineyards or crop fields which, by law, are entitled to use the river water. The tomero is hired by the land owners to open and close the "toma de agua" (water intake channel) of each estate, according to the number of hours assigned. Today, the tomero is the symbol of an irrigation system created more than a 100 years ago, which has enabled the development of vine-growing regions in Mendoza. |
